Do you have a hobby or interest that you want to share with your community? Whether it is ventriloquism, rock polishing, painting, or tap dance, we would like to invite you to share what you love at the Port Moody Public Library’s Fun Palace Pilot on Saturday, March 9, 2019 from 11am -2 pm.
What is a Fun Palace?
A UK-based idea developed by Stella Duffy and Sarah-Jane Rawlings in 2013, Fun Palaces is an ongoing campaign for cultural democracy. Fun Palace events occur worldwide as pop-up laboratories of fun where community volunteers share the activities they love with others. You could cross-stitch a pixel portrait, become a rock scientist, practice a few ballet moves, learn about backyard astronomy, or roll a few dice in a Dungeons & Dragons game.
Fun Palaces has an annual weekend of action every October with communities all over the world participating and hosting Fun Palace events. This year’s weekend of action will take place October 5-6, 2019.
What sort of activities are allowed?
Anything (within reason) that is interactive. We want community members to be able to get hands-on experience. Some examples are crafting, yoga, sports, dance, astronomy, playing a board game you’ve designed, displaying and talking about rocks you’ve found, etc.
What do I need to do?
You will need to complete an application form
(PDF). Completed forms can be dropped off at the Library’s Information Desk or emailed to email@example.com
by February 23rd.
What happens next?
A library staff member will contact you to set up a quick chat to go over your application and make sure that you have everything that you need to make your Fun Palace booth a success. If your proposed activity is not a perfect match for the Fun Palace, we will work to see if we can’t find another way or venue for you to share you passions with the community.
Do you have age restrictions?
All ages are welcome! But if you are under the age of 18, you will need permission from your parent/guardian.
Will the Library cover my supply expenses?
The library may be able to cover some expenses. Please detail any supplies needed in the application form.
Can I sell things at the Fun Palace or charge to do my activity?
The Fun Palace is meant to be a free, interactive fun workshop for the community and not a market. Selling of materials will not be allowed during the Fun Palace. However, if you have a card or website, you will be able to promote that. Banners for organizations will also be allowed.
